Tips for Storing Your Holiday Ham
Christmas and in the Philippines will not be complete without the holiday ham. Together with quezo de bola, puto bumbong, bibingka and fruit salad, holiday ham is considered a staple in the Filipino dining table every Christmas and even New Year’s Eve if there is still some ham left. And to make the most of your ham so that it won’t spoil away easily, here are some tips for storing your holiday ham:
Make sure that your hands are clean when slicing your holiday ham to avoid germs and bacteria from spreading.
You may freeze the whole ham in its original package for up to 2 months, provided you just wrap it in foil. If you don’t have the original packaging, then make sure to wrap it tightly in foil before placing it in a freezer bag.
Wrap the ham tightly in foil and then store it in a freezer bag with the air squeezed out. Make sure that it is tightly wrapped before freezing.
Store your Christmas ham in its bag or if it doesn’t come with a bag, an old pillowcase that has been washed in vinegar and wrung out completely. Don’t forget to wash and dry it every few days.
Store your holiday ham in the coldest part of the fridge and the temperature should be steady so avoid opening the door of the fridge frequently.
If you bought the ham with a bone, don’t throw out the bone but freeze it so you can still use it for stock or as a soup.
