Designer Perfumes: Why You Should Buy It and How to Spot It
To buy or not to buy designer perfumes, that is the question. Authentic perfumes are sought by fragrance lovers because of their lasting scent but not all individuals can afford the price of original perfumes, which lead them to look for knock-offs and cheaper alternatives.
However, special care should also be practiced when buying perfumes that are not authentic or original. Quoting Dior Perfumes North American Forecasting and Planning Director Patrick Bamburak: “Fragrance is absorbed by your body… a type of product that you ingest in some way.” As such, we should make sure that we are aware of what goes in the perfumes we are using as well as how they are processed. Bamburak said that counterfeit fragrances do not go through rigorous quality-control tests, research and development that original perfume makers ensure in their products. This results in fake perfumes having an alcohol-like smell that will not last through the day. Counterfeit perfumes have also been found to contain antifreeze, contaminated alcohol, urine, and harmful bacteria. In worst case scenarios, people who sprays these perfumes end up getting rashes and other allergic reactions which will cost more money in the long run to recover from.
So how to know if the fragrance we are eyeing is fake or original? Here are a few tips:
How much is it?
Check to see if the price is too low, as fake perfumes usually sell at really low prices. Remember that if it’s too good to be true, it probably is!
Check out the bottle.
Check the surface of the bottle if it’s smooth and fine. Fake perfumes tend to have rough, uneven bottle surfaces. You can also check if the perfume label is embossed as opposed to fake perfumes that only have labels printed on them. Another thing to look for is the cap of the perfume bottle. Is it tight-fitting and spill-proof?
Inspect the packaging.
Make sure that there are no errors in spelling. You can also compare your old box of authentic perfume with the one you just bought and see if there are any differences –sometimes when you look closely, you can see slight differences like a larger font or inconsistencies in product numbering. Another way to spot if a perfume is fake or not is if it contains a plastic cellophane around the box. If it does not, then it’s fake.
Is it clear?
Original perfumes should always be clear and should not have discolorations or fogginess. To know if the perfume’s authentic, shake the bottle and wait for the bubbles to appear in 10-15 seconds. If the bubbles immediately disappear then it’s a sign that the perfume is fake.
Does the scent last?
To know if the perfume is authentic or not, you may also spray some on a piece of paper, keep it then go away and check to see if the fragrance will last.
Now that you know how to spot a designer perfume from a fake one, you are ready to start shopping for original perfumes!
